The main Goldsmith family lived in Portsea for most of the 19th century. Stephen Goldsmith was however born in Sussex, probably in Ferring, and was married in Littlehampton before moving to Portsea between 1806 and 1808.

It is very likely that Stephen's parents were John Goldsmith and Mary Batchelor although at present this cannot be proved beyond doubt. John and Mary were probably married in Angmering on 18th May, 1780 and they had a son Stephen baptised in Ferring on 19th November, 1780.

Assuming this hypothesis to be accurate then we know more of John and Mary's family.
