Who Was William Thomas

William Thomas married Elizabeth Townshend on 15th October, 1786 at Halifax Parish Church.
No 576 - William Thomas of Halifax in this Parish Joiner and Elisabeth Townsend of Northowram in this Parish Spinster were married in this Church by Licence this fifteenth day of October in the year One Thousand seven hundred and eighty six by me E. Nilton Curate

This marriage was solemnized between us William Thomas Elisabeth Townsend (her mark) in the presence of Sam Thompson, Robert Theakstone.

William was dead by 1838 when his daughter Catherine married Richard Herbert Townshend. We therefore cannot get any guide to age from the census. However he was probably born between 1750 and 1760 (i.e. mid 20s to mid 30s when he got married). There appear to be three possibilities from the Halifax baptismal records.
William bap 28/3/1756 son of John Thomas, Bookbinder and Sarah Wadsworth
William bap 1750 son of Wm Thomas Weaver of Halifax
William bap 1764 son of John Thomas, Weaver
So far we have not been able to determine which is our William (indeed if he is one of these at all). But William did write in the Family Bible and it is therefore possible that the prime candidate is the son of the bookbinder.
